NEW DELHI: Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi moved into second round of doubles in the 315,000 Hieneken Shanghai Open beating Ben Ellwood Australia and Sargis Sargsian Armenia 6-4, 7-5. They now play the winner of Jan-Michael Gambill and Paul Haarhuis versus Sjeng Schalken and John Van Lottum. The Woodies have been top seeded in the tournament.
Elf in command
NAGPUR: Saket Adhikari8217;s second century 132 of the tournament guided Elf-Vengsarkar Academy, Mumbai, to a huge first innings total of 427 in a Pure Gold Ranji selection trial match against Kamraj Kesri XI here today at the VCA Stadium.
In reply, Kesri XI were 197 for three wickets at close of the second day8217;s play.
The Mumbai outfit 298 for five overnight resumed with unbeaten pair of Saket Adhikari and Onkar Khanwilkar. The latter departed after scoring 38 runs. But before his dismissal, 129 runs were added for the sixth wicket.
Vijayawada to host
VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada will play host to 21stJunior National u-18 Archery Championships, which will be conducted by Krishna District Archery Association from Dec 2 to 7, according to KDAA secretary Cherukuri Satyanarayana here on Monday.
As many as 250 archers from different states will take part in this six-day championship. Free boarding and lodging facilities will be provided to all participants.

Vaidya retires
BANGALORE: Karnataka wicket keeper Avinash Vaidya today announced his retirement from first class cricket. In a letter to the Karnataka State Cricket Association KSCA, Vaidya has cited 8220;the recurring back injury which was sustained during a Duleep Trophy match at Alwar, Rajasthan in 19958221; as the reasonfor retirement.
Vaidya holds the record of seven catches and two stumpings against Assam in the pre-quarters at Bangalore in 1994-95. 31-year-old Vaidya made his debut in Ranji Trophy in 1994 against Goa.
