Nayeemuddin, who was appointed coach of East Bengal’s arch-rivals Mohun Bagan last year, had to make way for Subrata Bhattacharjee midway into the season after Bagan suffered a string of upsets in consecutive tournaments.

Dravid to miss Ranji semis

BANGALORE:

Anil Kumble will lead Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Hyderabad, to be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here from April 11 to 15, the Karnataka State Cricket Association said here on Tuesday.

Rahul Dravid is unavailable for the game.

National Sub-Junior Throwball

PATNA: A three-day National Sub-Junior Throwball Championship will be held from April 28 here at the Moin-Ul-Haq Stadium.

Teams from 16 states will take part in boys’ and girls’ events. The participating teams are: West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Delhi, Rajsthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himchal Pradesh, Karnataka, Pondichery, Chnadigarh, Tamil Nadu, Gujrat, Maharashtra and host Bihar.

Megha, Amanjot for World Youth Cup

NEW DELHI: Amanjot Singh and Megha Vakharia will lead the Indian boys’ and girls’ challenge respectively at the NEC World Youth Cup tennis tournament in Jakarta from May 7-15.

Amanjot, P Vishal, Jaco T Mathew comprise the boys’ team with Rohan Gajjar as reserve. Megha, Isha Lakhani and Samrita Sekhar form the girls’ team with Nandita Chandrasekhar as reserve.

AITA also named a six-member team for World Junior Tennis Competition in Nonthaburi (Thailand) from April 30 to May 8. Karan Rastogi, Tushar Leberhan and Divij Sharan form the boys’ team with R Vasudevan as reserve. Ankita Bhambri, Sanaa Bhambri and Kartiki Bhat comprises girls’ team with Sharanya Pattabhi as reserve.

Railways upstage West Zone

CHENNAI: The Railways and Air-India continued their winning streak in the All-India Inter-Zonal Women’s Limited Overs Cricket Championship for the Cricinfo-Rani Jhansi Trophy, here on Tuesday. While National champions Railways defeated West Zone by 74 runs, Air-India scored a facile seven-run win over reigning champions South zone. In another match North defeated East by five wickets.

Brief scores: South Zone 84-9 in 50 overs (SV Vanitha 46 n.o.; P Seema 3-13, R Purnima 4-29) lost to Air-India 85-3 in 28 overs (Mithali Raj 24 n.o., Anju Jain 26 n.o.). East Zone 142 in 47.3 overs (Neetu Singh 26, P Chandrabali 37) lost to North Zone 143-5 in 38.5 overs (R Mehra 67 n.o., K Gurdeep 27; R Kavitha 2-25). Railways 184-5 in 50 overs (H Kala 69, DM Kulkarni 50 n.o.) bt West Zone 110 in 43.5 overs (S Amrita 44, A Vaidya 33; N David 3-24).

Martell National to be telecast live

MUMBAI: The 153rd edition of the Martell Grand National, one of the world’s greatest steeplechase and Britain’s biggest sporting events, will be telecast live on April 8 (8.30 pm) at Mahalakshmi with the co-operation of Royal Western India Turf Club.

The event features as many as 40 horses attempting to complete the 4.5 mile (7200 metres) course over 30 of the largest and challenging fences.

Rafting contest

MUMBAI: The Four Square Challenge rafting competition will be held at Rishikesh from April 5-7. Ten teams, including some from Europe, Iran and Nepal are expected to participate.

Jumman leads

NEW DELHI: Jumman, the fiesty old campaigner from Lucknow, shot a bogey-free round of six-under 66 to take the honours on the opening day of the Rs. 8.5 lakh 26th SRF Open Golf Championship, here on Tuesday.

At the 6,779-yard, par-72 course, Jumman opened up a two-stroke lead over local golfer Shamim Khan and Calcutta’s Feroz Ali, who were tried for second place at four-under 68. In tied fourth place at three-under 69 were defending champion Vijay Kumar, reigning Wills Indian Open champion Jyoti Randhawa and Mohammed Maqbool of Delhi.

Water sport complex

VIJAYAWADA: A naval water sports complex on the banks of river Krishna will be soon developed for giving traning to NCC cadets in Andhra Pradesh, Air Commodore SM Sethi, vsm deputy director general, AP NCC, said on Tuesday.

Talking to newsmen here, he said Rs. 17 lakhs, including Rs. three lakh for equipment, had been earmarked for the first phase of the project. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation had given its nod for land transfer and the project would be taken after getting the state cabinet’s approval.
