The Road Transport and Highways minister of India, Nitin Gadkari, is something of an internet personality as well. His YouTube channel has over 1.32 million subscribers, and he is often seen attending podcasts of other creators as well. He recently featured on director Farah Khan’s YouTube channel, where he shared stories from his political career and personal life. He also shared some interesting anecdotes in which he described the perks of being a top-level minister in India.
Gadkari and his wife, Kanchan, were both part of the video with Farah and her cook, Dilip. After fending off loan requests from Dilip, Farah started asking Gadkari about his personal life, especially his marriage. She first asked him about the number of years he has been married, and a confused Gadkari said, “I think that she (Kanchan) will tell you.” Farah quickly quipped at him and said, “Just like a man, he has forgotten his wedding anniversary.” Kanchan then set the record straight by reminding her husband that it’s been 41 years of marriage, and Gadkari redeemed himself by remembering the date.
‘I demolished her father’s home, didn’t give another house’
Soon Dilip again requested Gadkari to make a “small road” in his village. Farah, who was visibly irritated by the constant requests, told the minister to build a road straight through Dilip’s house. Kanchan interjected and said, “Then he won’t have his house anymore. Just like my father lost his home.” A shocked Farah looked at Gadkari, who smiled and said, “I demolished her father’s home because we had to extend a road.” When asked whether he built him a new home, Gadkari said, “No new home. I just gave him the compensation.”
‘I feed peacocks that land on my home from Sonia Gandhi’s residence’
He also revealed that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have been his neighbours. “Sonia Gandhi lives here. Manmohan Singh used to live here. We used to come to her house. I fed her peacocks”.
‘Train my personal chef or else…’
He shared another similar story and said, “Recently I went to Kolkata, and I really loved the Chinese food one restaurant was serving. I asked them to train my personal chef so that he could cook the same at my house. They declined the request and said it’s against their policy. I asked them, ‘Do you know who your restaurant belongs to?’ They said ‘no’. I told them it belongs to me because it exists on land owned by Kolkata Port Trust, and I am the shipping minister. If you don’t teach him, I will cancel your lease.”
Farah laughed at the story and said, “You used your power at the correct time.”
