Factories fined for deaths
Ahmednagar: Chief judicial magistrate P. D. Sankpal has imposed a fine of Rs 2.30 lakh on the city-based NavMaharashtra Floor Mill for negligence which led to the deaths of two workers. The Jamkhed-based Mahavir Ice Factory was imposed a fine of Rs 70,000 in connection with the deaths of three workers.

The decisions were given in connection with two separate cases filed by the factory inspectors.Three workers had died when an ammonia gas cylinder burst at the ice factory in September 1995. After the investigations, factory inspectors had filed cases against the factory owners, charging absence of factory permit, failure to inspect the ammonia cylinder and lack of safety equipments. In Nav-Maharashtra Floor Mill, Audumbar Kulkarni, a worker from Pune, had died in December 1990 and Jalindar Dongre, another worker, had died in July 1993. The court has ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 to the heirs of Dongre and Kulkarni, respectively. The cases against the factory were filed by the then factory inspector M N Gadappa.

Sangli: The Sangli police have registered a case against a housing society floated by Janata Dal corporator Netaji Kamble for cheating its members to the tune of Rs 49.50 lakh.

Kamble allegedly had filed bogus documents with forged signatures of a few senior government officials in connection with his Indiaranagar co-operative housing society for backward classes and its housing scheme.

Kamble and his housing project has been second major case of misappropriation of public funds, unearthed in quick succession after State Government ordering recovery of over Rs 2.03 crore which were found to be siphoned off.
