Gastro claims one life
Satara: ABOUT 40 cases of gastro enteritis have been reported from Kesarkhind village in Javli taluka, Satara district. The epidemic has also claimed the life of 34-year-old Mohan Sitaram Jadhav. Polluted well water is likely to be the cause. The affected have been treated and are out of danger, primary health centre, doctors said.

Kottapalle to head literary meet
Shrigonda: Dr Nagnath Kottapalle has been elected president of the seventh State-level rural Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, to be held here from January 23 to 25. The meet will be organised jointly by the rural Sahitya Parishad and Shree Shivaji College and will be inaugurated by poet N D Mahanor.

Sangam bridge closed till Nov 16
The old Sangam bridge, connecting Maldhakka chowk and Kamgar Putala chowk, will remain closed for all vehicular traffic till November 16.

Civic officials said this was necessary to allow the Pune Municipal Corporation construct 14 chambers. They said the brick chambers would be replaced with RCC ones to strengthen the bridge.

The water supply and sewerage department has recommended that the bridge be closed for heavy vehicles permanently. Development engineer roads has forwarded the proposal to the municipal commissioner.

MMC by-polls
Mahabaleshwar: The by-elections to the Mahableshwar Municipal Council MMMC have taken an interesting turn with the unanimous election of Baburao Dhanak, one of the members of the ruling party8217;s Giristhan Vikas panel. The ruling party8217;s candidate in ward no. 12, Mubaraq Usman Shaikh is being supported by his rival Maqsud Ismail Panhalkar.The polls to the nine wards of the council are slated for November 1 and 2. The seats fell vacant following the disqualification of nine council members by the Supreme Court under the Anti-Defection Act. Seven of the members are seeking re-election to the council.
