Chatterjee award for Gowarikar
Noted scientist and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pune Dr Vasant Gowarikar will receive the G P Chatterjee Memorial award for the year 1999-2000 at the hands of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at the 87th annual session of the Indian Science Congress to be held from January 3 8211; 7, 2000 in Pune.

The executive committee of the Indian Science Congress Association ISCA had decided to confer the memorial award which is one of the oldest. Under the theme quot;Science and Menquot;, the G P Chatterjee award is given to an individual who has made pioneering contributions to science over the years.

Adventist Youth Congress n THE Adventist Youth Congress is underway at the Spicer Memorial College till November 6. Hope beyond 20008242; is the theme of the congress and will focus on challenges that the youth will grapple with in the new millennium.

Over 1000 delegates from various states are participating in the Congress and will attend workshops on tobacco prevention, entrepreneurship, interpersonal relationships, personal goal setting, health awareness and dealing with AIDS, among others.

PPS threatens stir
The Patit Pavan Sanghatana PPS has threatened to launch an agitation to protest against the lack of facilities at the newly opened Pune branch of the Passport office.

In a memorandum of their demands submitted to the External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, Sandeep Khardekar, joint coordinator of PPS, pointed out that the passport office lacked several facilities including insufficient staff.

According to the statement, the passport office does not have application forms while agents sold the same at Rs 10 per form. The PPS has demanded the installation of an express counter apart from additional staff to clear the backlog. The PPS has also demanded an apology from the External Affairs Ministry for neglecting the Pune passport office and causing misery for the people.
