Save Higher Education Day
The Save Higher Education Day was observed in Central universities all over the country on Monday. Seminars were held in Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia, Hamdard University, NEHU, Pondichery University, IGNOU, Benaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, Nagaland University etc. Among the issues debated were those of the merits and demerits of privatising higher education, threats from invasion of foreign universities in the Indian education market, financial crises, the role of Ministry of Human Resources Development in higher education, besides others.

Members of the Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association in DU argued that as the state cannot give up its responsibility of funding Central Universities as they have been created under Acts of Parliament.

Cheque to Army Welfare Fund
A delegation of Residents8217; Welfare Association of Pocket-II, Mayur Vihar, Phase-I presented a cheque of Rs 29,262 for the Army Welfare Fund. The delegation comprising of Prof M.K. Kak, P.L. Chopra, U.D. Arya, Jagdish Kapoor and O.K. Saxena met the Adjutant General S.S. Grewal and discussed the rehabilitation plans for the dependents of Kargil martyrs.

Mukhi lashes out at Delhi govt
Jagdish Mukhi, leader of opposition, Delhi Assembly, condemned the Delhi government for its callous attitude towards the relocation of industries from non-conforming areas. He said based on the SC judgment of September 19, more than one lakh units in domestic and non-conforming areas will close down by December 31. As a result nearly ten lakh labourers would be rendered jobless, he pointed out.

Holding the Congress responsible, he said BJP urges the government to save these units from closing down.

Excellence award
Kendriya Bhandar has been honoured with the prestigious award for Cooperative Excellence in the field of consumer cooperation in the city. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit presented the award to Dr Sudarshan Synghal, General Manager of Kendriya Bhandar on Saturday. Kendriya Bhandar, with its 69 stores and four mobile vans, is the largest retailer in the country and also has the highest turnover, at Rs 228.71 crore during the year 1998-99.
