
Five held for plot to loot diamond merchant
Five members of a gang were arrested on Wednesday night while they were planning to loot a diamond merchant at Dahisar.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the five men near Debashish Building, opposite the Western Railway quarters at Dahisar E. Two country-made revolvers with four live rounds and a chopper have been recovered from the suspects.
The five men have been identified as Rajendrakumar Surendrasingh 25, Dilipkumar Tripati 18, Ramlakhan Nisar 25, Santoshkumar Tiwari 19 and Laukush Gaud 25.
Trickster arrested at Mahim
Mahim police arrested a confidence trickster, who is believed to have targetted people who live on their own.
According to the police, 33-year-old Jairaj Sitaram Manjrekar alias Sunil Naik robbed victims in Goa and Mumbai after gaining their confidence. He mostly singled out people staying alone, police added. He is named in at least eight cases in Goa and an equal number of cases in the city.
Manjrekarwas arrested at Mori Road at Mahim from a Maruti van GA01 V 3589 believed to have been stolen from Goa on Tuesday. A .303 loaded country-made revolver was recovered from him.
Award for cardiologist
City cardiologist Dr Ashwin Mehta was recently given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering work in treatment of various heart diseases.
The award was presented by Chief Justice of India, Dr A S Anand at the National Science Centre, New Delhi. Dr Mehta, who is also the director of cardiology at Jaslok Hospital, has a lot of experience in performing angioplasties in cases of acute heart attack. He also started and popularised the technique of catheterisation in new-borns, coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty.
