SYDNEY, JULY 24: Pakistan cricket great Imran Khan has questioned the explanation given by Australians Mark Waugh and Shane Warne for why they took money from an Indian bookmaker in 1994.
In an interview with the ABC8217;s Four Corners programme broadcast Monday, Imran scoffed at the story offered by the Australians over the US 9,000 they were paid by a bookmaker known only as John.
8220;With hindsight it makes no sense. Why would the bookies just give money to anyone for just giving a pitch report?,8221; Imran told the programme.
Waugh and Warne have said they were paid only for information on pitch conditions and weather.
Australian captain Steve Waugh dismissed Imran8217;s accusations, saying he was confident no Australian had been involved in bribery or match-fixing.
8220;I am as certain as I am that there8217;s nothing involving Australian players in bribery or match-fixing that will come out and see us in a bad light.8221;
Steve Waugh also told the programme he believed something was amiss during a 1994 match against Pakistan in a tournament in Sri Lanka.
The match has been identified by bookmaker Saleem Pervez as fixed.
Pakistan8217;s batting collapsed from a very strong position, with Waugh himself taking 3-14 from 10 overs.
8220;I8217;ve played 30 years and I know when things aren8217;t quite right,8221; Waugh said.
8220;I remember bowling in that game and taking three for 14 and I don8217;t normally take three for 14 off 10 overs to start with, so that was a bit suspicious.
8220;It was just the way that the opposition were playing. A couple of players in particular weren8217;t, didn8217;t appear, to be playing as if they normally would.8221;
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, who played in the match, denied it had been thrown.
8220;Pakistan always collapses. Steve should know that. We always collapse,8221; he said.
