SURAT, May 19: State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Jaspal Singh said that although it is mandatory for Liquefied Petroleum Gas LPG dealers to provide LPG cylinders to consumers at their houses, the State government8217;s cash and carry system8217; should be strictly implemented by department officials. Under the scheme, if consumers themselves approach the dealer and carry home their cylinders, they have to pay Rs 5 less as compared to home delivery.

Singh said at a meeting held with Civil Supplies officials that the department was not sincerely looking into complaints by individuals who approached the department. LPG dealers, officials of oil and petroleum companies and top officials of the department were present for the meeting.

Of the 3.70 lakh LPG connections in the city, 1.57 lakh connections are single-bottle connections, officials said, adding such consumers were given a second connection when they approached the department with an application. Singh asked ministers to ask consumers to opt for gas stoves instead of a second cylinder as not only would it reduce the practice of getting illegal connections it would also ensure safety as the stove bears an ISI mark.

The minister also discussed the problem of kerosene shortage, a complaint which the department has been receiving in large numbers. Singh is reported to have assured the officials that the problem would be permanently solved after the setting up of a new kerosene terminal on the outskirts of the city.

Meanwhile, Bharat Petroleum cancelled the license of a city-based oil dealer, who had reportedly been engaged in large scale black-marketing and irregularities in petroleum products.
