Michael Schumacher has watched Narain Karthikeyan in testing and thinks the 28-year-old Indian driver will handle the rigours of Formula 1.
Australia8217;s Mark Webber, who knows what it8217;s like to have the attention of a nation on his every drive, said Karthikeyan would make the most of his opportunities on his debut in this weekend8217;s Australian Grand Prix.
Karthikeyan happily accepts the endorsements of new peers; what he8217;s a little more concerned about is how his first drive in F1 will be rated along the length and breadth of India.
8216;8216;Obviously I8217;m excited, it8217;s my first Grand Prix, I8217;m the first Indian in Formula 1, so there8217;ll be a lot of eyes watching8217;8217;, Karthikeyan told a news conference today. 8216;8216;In India, they8217;re very happy for us, there8217;s a lot of support back home.8217;8217;
Karthikeyan has been a test driver for Minardi, Jordan and Jaguar, but his competitive racing has so far been in the Formula Ford, F3 and the Nissan World Series. The Indian conceded he had been mildly annoyed by speculation that he got his spot with Jordan because of the endorsements, sponsorship and exposure he brings to the team. He said he deserves his place on merit.
8216;8216;People have said I8217;m here because of commercial reasons. What I8217;d like to say is that in British F3, I was a race winner, also in the world series. Speed-wise, I8217;m not bad I think. It8217;s going to be quite good.8217;8217;
PEER PRAISE
Obviously he would like to have more running. I saw him test in barcelona, he did a good job there. I think he8217;s capable. The race and test situations are different but I think he8217;s doing a good job

Narain has done a lot of junior categories, and many years in Europe, so that8217;s healthy. He8217;s got limited running in a Formula 1 car, but I think he8217;s sensible about how he goes about his business. He8217;ll do his best with what he has.
