MUMBAI, March 28: Urban Development Department Secretary Nand Lal has submitted a list of Ulhasnagar corporators involved in building, protecting or patronising unauthorised structures to Municipal Commissioner A D Kale and asked him to report in 15 days 8220;on the action that will be taken.8221;

Chief Minister Narayan Rane had appointed a committee under Nand Lal on March 4 to probe the breakdown of governance in Ulhasnagar following a series of reports in Express Newsline. The list of corporators involved in illegal constructions is only one among many expected to be handed over by Nand Lal to the commissioner. A UMC official pointed out: 8220;Considering that 90 per cent of the structures in Ulhasnagar are illegal, we trust the list is merely the first in a series.8221;

Ulhasnagar Mayor Yashaswini Naik lauded 8220;the efforts to bring the guilty to book,8221; and said, 8220;the authorities should indiscriminately demolish all these illegal structures.8221; She added: 8220;If the demolition drive is undertaken, I willensure that my partymen will back the civic commissioner.8221;

The outgoing standing committee chairperson, Prakash Makhija, who had created quite a stir in municipal circles by winding up almost all standing committee meetings during his tenure in less than 10-15 minutes told Express Newsline: 8220;Till the authorities continue to target only selected people, the problem will persist. There has to be some uniformity in the action.8221;

Some corporators have complained that they are being singled out for 8220;unjust treatment.8221; Reacting to this, Nand Lal said, 8220;What the motives of the complainant are is not my lookout. I am only concerned about whether the complainant is true and whether I am being fair with the person against whom the complaint has been made.8221; Commissioner Kale has said the UMC will take action in all cases of unauthorised constructions. 8220;We have already initiated action in a few cases,8221; he pointed out.
