I-T graft case: Gupta146;s police custody extended

The Special Central Bureau of Investigations CBI court on Friday extended the police custody of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax R K Gupta till December 29. Gupta was arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe from a chartered accountant.

The Special Central Bureau of Investigations CBI court on Friday extended the police custody of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax R K Gupta till December 29. Gupta was arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe from a chartered accountant.

nbsp;The CBI sought further custody of Gupta stating that it had to recover an amount of Rs 24 lakh, which Gupta had given to his brother to invest. The agency believes that the money is part of the Rs 90 lakh given by Gupta to his brother for investment. The agency is also probing whether part of the money to be recovered was to be given to a senior I-T official. So far an amount of Rs 66 lakh has been recovered from the I-T official.

nbsp;Chief Public Prosecutor Ejaz Khan said, 8220;We need to recover the money from Gupta and he has not been cooperating in the probe. He also stated that credit and debit cards of banks in Nepal have been seized from Gupta and the CBI is investigating whether he has stashed large amounts illegally into those banks. The agency wants details on the accounts from Gupta.8221;

Gupta a 1994 batch Indian Revenue Service official was arrested on December 19 after he allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 4 lakh. While raiding his office at the Bandra-Kurla complex, another Rs 7 lakh stashed in his office was recovered. The police have till now arrested three other accused including a chartered accountant and an investment banker for their alleged connivance in the graft case along with Gupta.
