OROPESA DEL MOR SPAIN, OCT 27: Reigning World champion Koneru Humpy continued her march towards defending her title as she outplayed her opponent in the second round on a mixed day for India at the World Chess Championships for boys and girls here.

Girl8217;s under-12 top seed Humpy played the Pric Defence and faced the Austrian attack, but on the 10th move her opponent erred by playing Qe2 instead of Qh4.

The Indian took advantage of the situation thereafter and played brilliantly to outclass her rival in just 28 moves.

Soumya Swaminathan, Tania Sachdev, Aarthie Ramaswamy, Rahul Sangma, Sunil Rangarajan and P Harikrishna were the other Indians who recorded wins in the second round.

MR Venkatesh, playing in the boys U-14, was held to draw while Valay Parikh U-18 lost to 16th seeded Spaniard David Martinez.

Eesha Karavade U-12, Shraddha Somani U-14 and Y Pratibha U-16 were vanquished in their respective categories.

In girls U-10, Soumya Swaminathan faced the Steinitz variation in the Ruy Lopez and she played strongly from the beginning and mated her opponent in just 28 moves to open her account.

Tania Sachdev played the Sozin variation against the Sicilian defence. Her opponent blundered in the opening and lost a pawn and taking a cue from it Tania played an attacking game to win brilliantly in the end.

In U-18 girls, Aarthie Ramaswamy faced the French defence Tarrash Variation against Spain8217;s Vanessa Sanchez-Martin. Aarthie obtained double bishop advantage and when her opponent lost an exchange, the Indian attacked on the King side. Vanessa faced an inevitable mate and resigned on the 58th move.

In the boy8217;s section, Rahul Sangma played aggressively from the black side of French defence against Polish Filip Diczew. Sangma8217;s opponent made some weak moves in the initial stages and the Indian won two pawns and eventually the game.

In the U-12 category, Sunil Rangarajan played the classical variation of the Pric defence winning a pawn in the middlegame when his Slovakian rival Marko Srebrnic blundered. Rangarajan won another pawn in the rook and knight endgame forcing Srebrnic to resign on the 64th move when the Indian was about to queen his pawn.

MR Venkatesh had to settle for a draw against Selim Citak of Turkey. Venkatesh faced Tchigorin variation of the Ruy Lopez and after an unclear middlegame, Venkatesh blundered in time pressure losing a pawn and a piece in exchange of two pawns. However, Citak played some weak moves and the game proceeded to drawish ending after 65 moves.

P Harikrishna played the French defence and was faced with the Qe2 variation against Shaheen Ali of the United Arab Emirates.

Ali lost a pawn in the opening after which Harikrishna exchanged all the pieces to enter into a King and pawn ending with an extra pawn. Faced with inevitable loss, Ali resigned on the 30th move.
