Who are you targeting in your HDFC MF Relief Bond Fund?

The fund is aimed at retail investors and not institutions. Debt market returns have been bad and now that interest rates are higher than before, we think it is possible to offer a product that will give better returns if the investor stays with the product for about three years. It will buy medium-term paper and not long- or short-term debt paper.

If you’re targeting the retail investor, won’t the words ‘Relief Bond’ confuse him into thinking it’s the RBI Relief Bond?

How can anybody confuse HDFC with RBI? The two are different entities. We are not the RBI or the government. And this is a mutual fund and not a bond issue. There is no question of it being confused.

Then why call it a “Relief” bond fund at all?

The word has been used to tell the investor that the product gives a more predictable return. We can change the name if it causes confusion.
