After spending six years in Pakistani prisons for committing the 8216;8216;crime8217;8217; of accidentally crossing over to that country, Indian teenager Ranjit Kumar was today freed and handed over to BSF by Pakistan rangers here.

A weak-looking Kumar, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir, said after crossing over: 8216;8216;I cannot express my joy after being released from the Pakistani prisons where I spent horrible years.8217;8217; Kumar, 19, a resident of border Karyanal village of Jammu region, had accidentally crossed over to Pakistan after leaving his house on being admonished by his mother.

He was arrested by Pakistan rangers and confined in jails in Sialkot, Gujranwala and Lahore. Ranjit said he completed his sentence in 2001 but was not released as his antecedents were not confirmed by the Indian government on being asked to do so by Pakistan government.

8216;8216;Later on, I posted a letter from jail and informed my family members living in Jammu to pursue my case with the Indian Home Ministry for the confirmation of my antecedents,8217;8217; he said. After this was done, the Pakistan government decided to release Kumar.

Recalling the terrible conditions in Pakistani prisons, Kumar said: 8216;8216;No compassion could be expected from officials particularly for Indians who are lodged in the separate cells.8217;8217;
