Top seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt swept past South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the $380,000 Scottsdale Classic on Thursday.

Hewitt, winner of this event in 2000, broke serve in the 11th game of the opening set, then rifled a 118 mile-per-hour winner on set point. He was never pushed after that and raced through the second set, dropping only one more game on his way to victory.

The Australian will next face sixth-seeded Spaniard Alex Corretja, the former world number two, who needed the full three sets to defeat France’s Amaud Di Pasquale 7-6, 3-6, 6-1. Hewitt will have his work cut out against Corretja, who has won their last three matches.

Kendrick wins

DELRAY BEACH: Qualifier Robert Kendrick beat Jean-Rene Lisnard 7-5, 7-5 at the International Tennis Championships on Thursday to reach his first ATP quarter-final. Competing in just his second ATP Tour event, the 23-year-old American rallied back from a break point down to the Frenchman in both sets before sealing the victory.

Kendrick will now meet Belarussian Vladimir Voltchkov, who advanced when Armenian Sargis Sargsian was forced to retire from their match with muscle cramps while trailing 5-7, 6-4, 1-0. Sargsian began to show signs of distress in the middle of the second set before finally succumbing to severe cramping after Voltchkov held his serve to open the third set.

In other second round action, fourth seed Jan-Michael Gambill battled past fellow American Justin Gimelstob, 7-5, 7-5 and will now take on Brazil’s Flavio Saretta, who upset eighth-seeded American Vincent Spadea 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
