CHANDIGARH, Jan 5: quot;Direct experience of the spot, with eyes and through the heart, is an essential ingredient, something that makes sensible architecture.8221; Jean Louis Veret was back in the city to stress the sense and sensibility that went into the making of Chandigarh as the city gears up to celebrate the 50 years of its conception.
Veret is from the Corbusier camp, having worked with him in the prestigious Ahmedabad projects, including the Sarabhai villa. In fact, he was here for the inauguration of Chandigarh and vividly remembers the tricolour fluttering along the newly-built roads.
Veret is back in the city again for the convention of architects that begins from the ninth of this month. The architecturally inclined got to hear about the essence of architecture from him at a lecture organised by the Alliance Francaise this evening.
Throughout the lecture, which was supported by a slide show, Veret stressed on the importance of team work in architectural projects and took examples from his own career. He also harped upon the usage of available materials and techniques for making the projects economically viable.
The village that he had erected along the Mediterranean coast in 8217;65 reflects the ethos of the coastal belt with narrow pathways and courtyards. Interestingly, there is a resemblance with the buildings of Chandigarh in his structures, though it is restricted to the early period. Veret emphasises on maintaining ecological balance while designing his structures, even if it is an entire town. He also uses pre-fabrication, in which the construction could be done step by step.
Veret8217;s passion seemed to be in the restoration of old buildings, mainly cathedrals and hospitals. that were either destroyed in the World War or just needed catching up with time. For the cathedral, he stuck to the original concept of space and time, quot;as it was also a process of evolution for me,8221; he said. But in this his piece-de-resistance is the Centre for Film Archives that he had carved out of an old fort which was destroyed by the retreating German soldiers.
Veret had one thing to tell the young students of architecture present in the hall, quot; What is essential is to think and use those ideas aesthetically, at the same time taking the public utility into account8221;.
