PUNE, Jan 4: No one can deny Harmeet Singh Kahlon’s status on the amateur circuit. The India No. 1 played the best golf of his career at the Poona Club golf course to record a sizzling four-under 67 today and lay his claim on the 19th PSCB golf meet which concluded today.

Harmeet’s effort today helped him end up with a two-under 140 score after the completion of 36 holes. The Chandigarh based amateur thus made it three-in-a-row after previous triumphs in Calcutta (1996-97) and then Bangalore (1997-98). Going as per the records, today’s triumph was his seventh in the inter-institution meet.

The effort today thus helped Harmeet capitalise on the rather contrasting round played by overnight leader teammate Simarjeet Singh who shot an eight over 78 to end up with 148 to his name. One stroke behind was Amit Dubey — who just a few months back had bagged the Maharashtra Amateur Open at the same venue. Amit, who was part of the Bangkok Asian Games contingent, carded a five-over 75 effort which was double of what he submitted on the opening day.

The day seemed tailor-made for Harmeet who interestingly played 15 regulations and was at his best in sportsmanship on the par-3 3rd. A tee-off in the bunker had Harmeet negotiate the sand hazard with a pitching wedge which was placed in a precarious position, “It was tough negotiating the shot,” he explained. Nevertheless taking up his stance to chip-out a dry leaf behind the ball saw his swing be withdrawn at the last minute. “It could have gone unnoticed, but I preferred to confirm with the chief referee who said a stroke had to be dropped. As a result I bogeyed the hole,” — the only blemish in his card.

Another high point on a rather clean card submitted by Harmeet was on the 12th where he missed an eagle as the 10 foot putt turned away at the wrong moment.

In the team event OIL `A’ also made it a hat-trick with a gross total of 442 leaving behind GAIL `A’ at 456 and ONGC `A’ at 458.
