NEW DELHI, May 13: After eight years of legal arguments, the murder trial of criminal lawyer Baba Gurcharan Singh came to an end after Additional Sessions Judge ASJ R.C. Yaduvanshi yesterday held one of the three persons facing trial guilty. The arguments on the order of the sentence will commence from tomorrow.
Manjit Singh had gone to the lawyer8217;s office with Brij Mohan on June 6, 1991, and shot him dead. Mohan was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh a few months later. The two acquitted are Ajay Tomer, accused of masterminding the murder, and Jerry, from whose house the murder weapon was reportedly recovered. The police, however, were unable to prove the conspiracy behind the murder and the circumstances which led to the recovery of the weapon. Tomer is currently in prison for his involvement in the 1981 Palika Bazaar shootout.
Ajay Tomer was apparently hired by a jeweller to kill his rival in the same complex. Tomer was arrested and put to trial and Baba Gurcharan Singh, Special Prosecutor for the case, had vehemently opposed Tomer8217;s bail application. The lawyer reportedly received threatening calls for opposing Tomer8217;s bail.
The police told the court that Tomer hatched the murder conspiracy while he was lodged in Tihar. He hired Manjit Singh and Brij Mohan to do the job, the police submitted. One of the victim8217;s juniors, K.K. Tyagi, who later deposed as an eyewitness, witnessed the incident.
Baba8217;s post-mortem showed five bullets in his body. The prosecution deposed 33 witnesses, with Tyagi as prime witness. Baba Gurcharan Singh has fought several well-known cases. He was also appointed as the lawyer against Kiran Bedi, who was accused of allowing a mob to create fracas against the Tees Hazari lawyers in 1989. The order went against Kiran Bedi who was later transferred from her post. In 1981, after the Palika Bazar shootout, he was appointed as the Special Prosecutor by the LG.
