Govt colleges to start 1 classes8217;

Government College, Sector 11, has been sanctioned one section in non-medical Plus One, which implies that it can admit 75 students. The adjoining Government College for Girls, Sector 11, has been sanctioned two sections of 75 students each, one each in the medical and non-medical stream. Similarly, the Government College for Girls, Sector 42, has also been allotted one section each in medical and non-medical stream.

According to the proposal of the UT administration, classes in Government College, Sector 11, and Government College for Girls, Sector 11, will be regarded as extended sections of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16. Similarly the class in Government College for Girls, Sector 42, will be regarded as an extended section of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35.

Sources revealed that the decision to re-introduce science classes in city government colleges has been done in view of the surplus staff and laboratory facilities in the colleges. Ever since the Plus Two classes were shifted to schools, the work load of science teachers in city colleges has decreased.

While the administration has decided to grant admission to students in rural students and colonies on a priority basis, many are wondering whether the city colleges, especially the girls8217; colleges, will be able to fill their seats from amongst students from colonies, rural areas and slums.

Government College, Sector 46, has, however, not been sanctioned any seats as it does not offer studies in the science stream. Apart from these, DAV College, Sector 10, is the only college which runs Plus One science classes.
