NEW DELHI, June 9: The government today announced in the Lok Sabha that it has agreed to the request of Opposition members for conducting a CBI enquiry into all the wheat deals between 1996 and 1998, including the controversial Rs 950 crore import of 1.5 million tonnes from Australia.

Congress members in the Lok Sabha alleged that the government had bought the Telugu Desam’s support by agreeing to remain silent on the Rs 950 crore wheat import and demanded a CBI inquiry or a joint parliamentary committee probe into the deal with Australia.

Prithviraj D Chauhan (Congress) and others cited news reports to say that initially the government wanted to reopen the deal but decided otherwise and cleared the contract after winning the crucial vote of confidence with Telugu Desam’s support.
