MUMBAI, JULY 26: Governor Dr P C Alexander has summoned Speaker Arun Gujarathi with a report on details of Shiv Sena MLAs going berserk in the Legislative Assembly following party chief Bal Thackeray8217;s arrest on Tuesday.
quot; The Governor has asked me to meet him on Thursday alongwith my report on what happened in the Assembly on Tuesday, quot; Gujarathi told reporters today.
He has also been asked to bring the photographs and video cassettes of the damaged Assembly Hall.
Twelve Sena MLAs were suspended by the Lower House for a period ranging from six months to one year after they went berserk to protest against Thackeray8217;s arrest. The MLAs damaged the august chair of the Speaker, his table, glass panes of the recording room, table of the legislature secretary and removed the mikes fitted on the Opposition benches to give vent to their frustration.
The cost of the damage is estimated to be around Rs 3.5 lakh, Gujarathi said.quot;Their anger was justified but not the way they adopted for it,quot; he said while reacting on the behaviour of the Sena MLAs.
Asked if he was ready to reduce the suspension period of the guilty MLAs, Gujarathi said it was upon the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties to decide on the matter. quot;I am ready to find out a golden via-media but the proposal should come from both the parties, quot; he said.
In reply to a query, Gujarathi said neither the Opposition leaders nor the MLAs under suspension had apologised for what they did in the House.
Meanwhile, the ruling Democratic Front, especially the NCP, is not in a mood to reduce the suspension period of the Sena MLAs. quot; Our front partners are of the opinion that the disciplinary action against the MLAs is disproportionate to what they did in the House, quot; said Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh while addressing a press conference.
He admitted that the Opposition had proposed a cut in the suspension period of the MLAs but the Business Advisory Committee of the House had not taken any decision on the issue.
