AMRITSAR, June 17: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Teachers Association withdrews dharna as they said the university lecturer who was allegedly abducted had been traced and was on his way to Amritsar from Ropar where he was taken to by the police.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Amritsar Paramjit Singh Gill said that the matter was amicably resolved between the police and the university after negotiations. However, he clarified that lecturer was not abducted but was taken away by the Ropar police regarding some clarifications in connection with someone else’s case.
This has ended the high drama that ensued here yesterday involving the alleged abduction of the lecturer by the police in the broad day-light from outside the university gate.
GNDUTA has criticised the modus operandi of the police in which it has allegedly threw Devinder Singh, Psychology lecturer, in a car and fled when he was accompanied by colleague Mohan Pal Singh Ishar, Reader, Pharmaceutical Science Department.
Secretary of GNDUTA Parminder Singh condemned the incident and said that it was a serious matter as police should have approached the Vice Chancellor before “rounding up” the lecturer.
He said that teachers hold respectable position in the society and were looked up as ideals, this has adversely affected the image of the teaching profession.
Even Vice Chancellor H.S.Soch has confirmed the lecturer’s well-being as he said he talked to him over phone today morning and `he is perfectly O K’, he added.
