Saddam8217;s son blamed for attack on UN office

CAIRO: An Iraqi Opposition group claimed today that President Saddam Hussein8217;s younger son was behind a grenade attack on the United Nations8217; Baghdad headquarters last week.

The Iraqi Broadcasting Corporation IBC said Qusai Hussein, the head of Iraq8217;s security apparatus, 8220;planned and ordered8221; Friday night8217;s attack to intimidate and frighten UN weapons inspectors. IBC is the information wing of various dissident groups in exile.

DHAKA: Bangladesh tightened security along its border amid fears that an insurgent group from India may launch attacks in retaliation to the arrest in Dhaka of the group8217;s leaders, news reports today.

The ULFA, which is fighting for a separate homeland for the ethnic Assamese in northeastern India, may bomb Bangladeshi targets and kill people to pressure the Government to release its leaders, the Associated Press of Bangladesh agency said.

Kasi trial

WASHINGTON: Lawyers for convicted killer Mir Aimal Kasi of Pakistan, seeking to overturn a death sentence recommended by a jury in November, have asked a Virginia court to subpoena a juror, court documents have said.

Kasi was convicted of killing two officers of the Central Intelligence Agency CIA outside CIA headquarters near Washington in 1993.

Quake hits China

BEIJING: A moderately strong earthquake jolted the northern Chinese city of Xian, injuring some children and damaging old houses, an official report said today. Panicked school children and workers rushed outside as the magnitude 4.8 quake struck at 9:36 local time yesterday.
