Shireen Mehra cranks out women-only trips for safe, carefree journeys

Janak Sharma loved holidays with her family but there was always a missing ingredient. “I couldn’t go for adventure sports, and there was always the hassle of looking after the children,” she says. That was when a friend told her about Shireen Mehra and her Women on Clouds, a travel company by women, for women. Finally, Sharma went on her first ever holiday without her family and the 35-year-old housewife did all the things she always wanted to.

The six-month-old travel company of Mehra, 30, works on the idea that women can have a great time together. There have already been trips to Camp Red Stone in Dehradun and Ladakh, the itinerary filled with rappelling and rock climbing sessions and long walks on barren terrain. “Women can live without shopping,” laughs Mehra, who began operating out of a basement office at Gulmohar Park. She was surprised at how popular her venture became even before they started advertising. “A lot of the callers are working women but there is a sizeable number of housewives as well. Clearly, it is fun to break away and just have fun with other women sometimes,” she says. Groups comprise five-12 members and rates vary.

Mehra and her staff carefully go over the details, with safety and clean toilets being the biggest priorities. “Then, there is food. Since women are good cooks themselves, we have to ensure the meals are tasty,” she says. After the first tentative steps, Mehra’s company is now ready to fly, with future trips including foreign destinations.
