Senior Janata Dal (United) leader George Fernandes may have disappointed his supporters by staying away when they revived the Samata Party on January 21, but he is likely to attend their UP state convention in Lucknow on February 18.

Fernandes has not yet made up his mind to take the plunge and join the Samata. But former Lok Sabha member Brahmanand Mandal, who presides over the revived Samata, has sent an invite to him to be the “chief guest” at the Lucknow convention.

In his letter, Manda told Fernandes that “party worker had made a request to you to this effect when they met you at your residence” on January 22, a day after the Samata revival convention. Though Fernandes had steered clear of the convention, his associates Jaya Jaitly, Shiv Kumar and Anil Hegde had returned to the Samata ranks.

“You are the founder of the Samata Party and the party still believes in the policy and programme which were formulated under your stewardship,” Mandal said in the letter.

Asked if it would be proper for Fernandes to go to the convention of another party, sources close to him said, “Not the least”. Even JD(U) leaders had been to BJP meetings as guests, he added.
