President Pevez Musharraf is considering an option to hold the general election ahead of the scheduled date to get himself elected by the assemblies, according to media reports.

“Hectic consultations are continuing and the government is already in contact with opposition parties, particularly Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Rehman’s Jamat-e-Ulema Islami (JUI), for their support to re-elect the president,” media reports quoted sources as saying.

They said if the government reaches an understanding with the opposition parties, particularly the PPP, the assemblies would be dissolved in July. A final decision on the mode of Musharraf’s re-election is expected within a week, the Daily Times said.

The term of the president’s office expires on November 15. The re-election from the next assemblies is possible only if the present assemblies are dissolved, the general elections are held within 90 days and the new assemblies are constituted before the cut-off date of October 15 for the president’s re-election.
