VADODARA, Oct 14: Nearly 60 domestic and industrial connections in Makarpura and GIDC Makarpura have been disconnected by the Gujarat Electricity Board GEB for their failure to pay outstanding dues.

Official sources said the connections were snapped in the last two days and the drive is expected to continue. Power connections of persons who had not paid the bills the period ranging from two months to a couple of years were also disconnected, the sources added.

Sources said out of the total connections disconnected, about 20 were industrial connections of units located in the GIDC. Sources claimed that the move had sent shivers among the defaulters, prompting a few to pay dues to avoid disconnection. Sources said one defaulter paid Rs 85,000 on Wednesday.

The connections were snapped on the orders of the Board8217;s GIDC zone office.

Board chairman Nalin Bhatt had said on Tuesday that the GEB had decided to take stern action against defaulters. The GEB besides recovering fine from defaulters while disconnecting connections, has also been filing police cases against the erring.

The Board has also asked the State Government to introduce a special act to recover dues from habitual offenders.
