It was the earthly humour of Lalu Prasad Yadav that greeted GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt, who came here to explore business ventures with the Indian Railways.

‘‘GE is the world’s No. 1 company and our mission is to make Railways the No. 1 company in India,’’ the Railway Minister said today. Impressed by the “turn around in the fortunes of Railways”, Immelt said: “If you improve at this rate, one day the Indian Railways may take over GE.’’

Though the meeting was “exploratory” in nature, GE showed interest in Railways’ projects such as improving the signalling system, the freight corridor and various other areas with a scope for technical advancement. “We have discussed issues of mutual interest and it was fruitful,’’ Lalu said.

OSD to the Railway Minister Sudhir Kumar said: “It was an opportunity for GE to understand the needs of the Railways and us to explain our positions. However, we have a open competitive bidding system through which we invite partnerships.’’

Telescopic fare: The Railways has restored the telescopic benefits in end-to-end fares with effect from June 15. Prior to April 2006, passengers were permitted to purchase tickets for stations even beyond the destination station of the train, availing telescopic benefits on the fare.
