8226; Theirs was an attack on India8217;s financial nerve-centre and commercial capital. The terrorists also sought to polarise Indian society by claiming to be acting to redress the grievances of India8217;s Muslims. And by singling out Britons, Americans and Israelis, they demonstrated that their brand of Islamist fanaticism is anchored less in the absolutism of pure faith than in the geopolitics of hate. The risible attempt to claim the Mumbai killings in the name of the 8220;Deccan Mujahideen8221; merely confirms that wherever the killers are from, it is not the Deccan. In its military precision, the assault on Mumbai bore no trace of what its promoters tried to suggest it was 8212; a spontaneous eruption by angry young Indian Muslims. This horror was not homegrown. But if these tragic events lead to the demonisation of the Muslims of India, the terrorists will have won.

8226; Intelligence officials in the UK say there is no evidence yet to confirm this that some British nationals may be involved in the Mumbai attacks but it would not be surprising if it were true. British nationals with Pakistani backgrounds have been involved in many terrorist incidents, both in this country and abroad. One thing that all had in common is that they attended mosques or events in Britain where fundamentalist messages were routinely issued. They also had family links with Pakistan which made it easier for them to travel to the country where they would be trained by jihadists. An estimated 400,000 trips a year are made by Britons of Pakistani origin to their ancestral homeland. If British citizens were involved, MI5 will at least hope that they have had their suspicions about them.

8226; Pakistan was among the first countries that sent messages of solidarity to New Delhi after the Mumbai outrage by the Deccan Mujahideen. The message from Islamabad is entirely credible but will it be convincing too? There is no doubt that Pakistan is under attack from the same kind of 8220;mujahideen8221;. The latest message emanating from South Waziristan is that the Taliban will now be targeting President Zardari 8220;and his political allies8221;.

8226; The brazen, well-planned bloodbath at major hotels, hospitals, the railway station and other sites was calculated to shake India8217;s brash self-confidence and scare off foreigners, strain ties with Pakistan, and fan tension between Hindus and Muslims. While the terrorists got the notoriety they sought, as the world looked on in horror, they must be denied the wider victory they crave. Moreover, while Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had reason to believe the killers were 8220;based outside the country8221;, implying ties with Pakistani extremists or al-Qaeda, both nations must act with restraint, and not allow the crisis to derail efforts to improve relations.

8226; In short, Mumbai belongs to no one. Or it belongs to everyone. To the Parsi, the Marwari, the Gujarati, the Punjabi, the Englishman and the European and yes, the Maharshtrian. That8217;s why whatever wedges have been hammered into it from the past in an attempt to divide it have not succeeded. The terrorists holed up in the Taj and the Trident have tried their best to hammer yet another nail in. But something tells me they will not succeed.
