
MUMBAI, SEPT 1: Additional Sessions Judge S J Shah sentenced a youth who stabbed an acquaintance when the latter refused to give him cigarettes in 1996 to four years rigorous imprisonment on Monday.
Special Public Prosecutor G D Raje told the court that the incident took place on January 4, 1996, at a wedding at Jaffri High School at Govandi where Mohammed Arif Nazir Shaikh was assaulted with a knife by Mohammed Yusuf alias Supari Mohammed Amir Shaikh.
Nazir was attending the wedding of Kamar Khan, the brother of his friend Yasin. Yusuf, a fellow guest, demanded cigarettes from Nazir, who gave these to him several times during the evening.
Under the influence of alcohol, Yusuf ordered Nazir to serve him food. Nazir requested him to wait but Yusuf demanded another cigarette. When Nazir refused to oblige, Yusuf abused him and then then stabbed him in the stomach with a pocket knife.
Nazir was rushed to the Shatabdi Hospital where he was treated and discharged while Yusuf who managed to escape wasarrested a few days later.Yusuf was tried under Sections 307 attempt to murder of the IPC for which he was acquitted. However he was convicted under section 324 causing grievous hurt of the IPC and was sentenced to undergo four years RI. N M Edkay appeared for Yusuf.
Meanwhile, Additional Sessions Judge S M Deshmukh sentenced a youth to life imprisonment on Monday in connection with the murder of a gold and silversmith at Dahisar in 1996.
Special Public Prosecutor Kalpana Chavan said Kishore Adak was found dead at his Francis Chawl residence DahisarW on May 7, 1996 by his brother. He had been strangled to death with a towel and cash and ornaments valued at Rs 50,000 were missing.
