Now that the weather has turned, Fabindia is set to present an exhibition of jamawar and paisley shawls. Woven and worn in India for centuries, the beauty and meticulous craftsmanship of the Kashmiri shawl has captured the imagination and influenced fashion and textile design the world over. The original Kashmiri shawl 8211; the Kshmiri kani or Jmawar shawl 8211; is woven by hand on a basic loom and takes about a year to complete. The labour-intensive technique requires team work and the shawls are woven in pieces and assembled. The patterns reflect the exceptional design capabilities of the shawl-makers. The European shawls, called Paisleys named after a town in Europe where they were first made 8211; were created on draw and jacquard looms, taking only a few weeks to complete. Famous designers of the day stepped in with their own designs, motifs and colours to suit local taste and fashion. For close to 50 years, Fabindia has been making the best of craft accessible to discerning customers. This exhibition showcases the collection of Aditi Desai, who has been collecting these precious shawls for decades. The shawls on sale are also part of her collection. 8220;Every shawl has a story to tell, and we are showcasing this because we firmly believe that craft must become a part of our daily life if it is to be sustainable,8221; remarked Saveen Sharma, Market Region Head for Fabindia.
The exhibition will be on from November 26 to 28 at Fabindia8217;s Sector 9 store.
