The news item, 8216;Indo-US Joint Operations in the Offing8217; IE, September 6, is really disturbing. The old proverb, fools rush in where angels fear to tread appears to be coming true with the NDA government8217;s policy of tying up the Indian Armed Forces to the American defence establishment. What started as mutual cooperation in fighting terrorism, is slowly turning into the Indian Armed Forces coming under the undue influence of the US defence setup.

First, it was the joint operation at Agra where our jawans had to sweat it out in hot tents while the Yankee troops were ensconced in five-star air-conditioned hotels, not exactly a morale booster for our men. Now it is the report of Americans getting into the middle levels of our air force.

It appears that our present rulers are going to negate all the sacrifices of freedom fighters like the great Balgangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, and countless others, by walking into the trap that is the American defence establishment.

The US is notorious for bribing and corrupting the defence personnel of the victim country. An outstanding example of this is our neighbour, Pakistan, where America has propped up one tin pot dictator after another. The same fate awaits India if this trend continues for too long. Then India will adorn the ranks of the banana republics that the US has created in Central and South America and elsewhere.

Prime Minister Vajpayee took the initiative and put this country in the nuclear club much to the chagrin of the Western Powers. Somewhere along the road, he seems to have lost the steam, surrounded as he was by the toadies of the western powers.

He can still be an architect of India as a world power if he accepts the the sincere offers of a mutual defence alliance given by both Russia and China. Three giants of Eurasia in a triumvirate can be an excellent counter to the world8217;s self-appointed Super Cop, the US, which is now power drunk. He unilaterally bombs small nations like Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, and so on, whenever fits of paranoia strike his brain, to kill or maim thousands of innocent men, women and children.

The Eurasian triumvirate will assure that small countries like Iraq are safe from the unilateral hits by the US. It perceives Saddam Hussein as another Mustafa Kamal Pasha of Turkey who modernised that nation. Iraq, under Hussein, is a modern nation where women need not wear the burqa and usually don western dresses. It is his efforts to modernise Islam that has made him a villain in western eyes.

As a member of the Eurasian Alliance, India should not only protect Iraq but also Iran and other nations and so earn their good will and sympathy.
