Following the serial blasts in the Capital last week, a wary Delhi government is endeavouring to go hi-tech and implement a foolproof security system for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. 8220;Under the new regime, a strong vigil will be kept on sensitive spots through satellite and entry to games village and sports venues will be strictly through electronic I-cards. All roads and crossing leading to sports complexes will be kept under electronic surveillance,8221; Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit told Newsline.

As per the plan, a 8216;games village management and crowd management system8217; will be in place ahead of the Games. A hi-tech traffic management centre will be a part of the programme as part of which a fleet of helicopters will monitor traffic movement during the mega event spanning October 3 to 14, 2010.

8220;To control the flow of visitors, a crowd management system will be in place. An electronic ticketing system network will link metro stations, bus stands and select taxi stands. The government has already placed orders to foreign suppliers for the latest surveillance mobile cameras,8221; Dikshit said.

8220;More than a 1000-strong workforce is busy in developing the whole system. All state government departments are being linked through Wide Area Network WAN. Some strategic spots will become Wi-Fi zones. A 10-kilometre area around the Commonwealth Games village will be covered under Wi-Fi system. To provide Internet facility to visitors, about 500 cyber cafes will be set up,8221; Dikshit added.

The government will soon invite bids from reputed IT firms to showcase sports, cultural activities, shopping and tourist spots and health facilities. The information will be given through large display boards.

The whole idea is to instill a sense of security in Delhiites and visitors who have been left insecure following two major terror attacks in less than three years.

Around 20 call centres will be set up in Gurgaon and Noida. These will be used to provide information about tourism, sports, ticketing and health. To provide the latest information, more than 2000 information kiosks will also be set up.
