Uttar Pradesh is finally set to see some relief from the cold wave. Minimum temperatures, which had dropped below 4°C in places like Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Bareilly, are expected to rise by 3-5°C from January 15.

However, the warming comes with a caveat: fog is expected to increase in both density and coverage in the region.

Light rain and drizzle, under the influence of Western Disturbances, are also expected from January 18, which could bring a temporary drop in temperatures again.

“Following the passage of a Western Disturbance, the wind direction has shifted back to northwesterly. This had led to a 2-4°C drop in day and night temperatures across most parts of the state over the past 48 hours,” explained experts from the Meteorological Centre in Lucknow.

“Minimum temperatures had dropped significantly below 4°C in some areas of Western UP, causing a cold wave in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Bareilly. With no major change expected in the next 48 hours, a cold wave and frost are likely tonight in parts of Aligarh, Meerut, Saharanpur, Moradabad, and the Rohilkhand division,” they said.

Meanwhile, in the northern Terai regions and far southern parts of Western UP, experts said dense fog is expected in the early morning hours, but it is likely to clear quickly, giving way to sunshine and daytime relief from the cold.

Temperature outlook (for next 7 days)

As per the IMD:

-Maximum temperatures are likely to have no large change during the next three days and will see a gradual rise by 2-3°C thereafter.
