VADODARA, April 26: Having got egg all over its face following the escape of Raju Rohida from its custody, the Vadodara city police is planning a `foolproof’ system to prevent such incidents from recurring. Commissioner of Police J Mahapatra told Express Newsline on Monday that he was trying to prepare a list of dangerous criminals lodged in the Baroda Central Jail and obtain a collective court order to have them handcuffed while being escorted out of jail.

Obtaining permission for individual convicts was a time-consuming process and escort parties often had little time on hand to approach the courts when they were asked to escort the criminals. “By this, we will be spared the tedious process of approaching the court every time we are required to produce a criminal in the court”, he pointed out.

The city police had established contact with the Mumbai police in the efforts to re-arrest Rohida, Mahapatra said, adding that he was confident of the former being caught soon. Meanwhile, sources in the Government Railway Police here said that the Rohida escape case had been transferred to the Mumbai police for investigation.

Speaking on the decision to deploy PSI Bharat Joshi as head of the escort team, Deputy Commissioner of Police Meera Ramniwas said: “It was a routine duty and escort party had been given sufficient time to make themselves ready.” She said Joshi was selected to head the escort team because of his “long experience”.

She was severely critical of the policemen’s decision to accept food from Rohida. `While we ourselves warn people not to accept eatables from strangers while travelling in trains and buses, it is astonishing for a PSI with an experience of 30 years to accept hospitality from a dreaded criminal”, she stated.

Police sources said that a note from the police control room had been given both to the PSI as well as constables to take full precautions for escorting Rohida.

Suspended PSI Joshi, who is still in SSG Hospital, told this reporter that he had a heated exchange of words with Rohida at Kalyan Railway Station when the latter sought permission to spend half an hour with his wife in a hotel room.
