CHANDIGARH, Feb 21: The Chandigarh Housing Board has formulated a scheme for allotment of ready-made dwelling units to Kashmiri migrants in the Union Territory. The CHB has already identified 14 such vacant and unoccupied built-up flats in Indira Colony in Manimajra for allotment under the scheme.
According to CHB chairperson, Meenakshi Dutta Ghosh, the scheme has been evolved as part of the CHB exercise to ascertain unoccupied, vacant and unutilised dwelling units and make available ready-made dwelling units to the public.
The scheme was worked out in response to the Chandigarh Administration8217;s plea made earlier last year to the CHB to formulate a scheme for Kashmiri migrants from Jammu amp; Kashmir, since they were occupying community centres in various parts of the City.
After debating upon the matter, the CHB finalised that it would not be prudent to offer the dwelling units on rent and neither allot them directly. The CHB has now written to the Administration offering the dwelling units, under which the identified vacant and unoccupied flats would be placed at the disposal of the Estate Office, for further allotment to Kashmiri migrants. Ghosh said the Estate Officer will be responsible for identifying the Kashmiri migrants and allotting the units to them. The Estate Office would also make the payment to CHB for the dwelling units and would be responsible for the recovery of money from the allottees.
After disturbed conditions in the Jamp;K, a number of Kashmiri families had migrated to Chandigarh and the Administration had in 1990, provided them with temporary accommodation in the community centres at Sectors 20, 29 and 40. Since the community centres occupied by them were not being put to public use and the MC was also making efforts to get the premises vacated, the Administration requested the CHB to formulate a scheme for them. Earlier, the CHB had made available unoccupied and vacant houses to freedom fighters and widows of freedom fighters who had been waiting for many years now. The CHB also plans to come out with more such schemes after identifying the vacant and unoccupied houses.
