
Saudi authorities have arrested five men suspected of involvement in the deadly suicide bombings in the kingdom, including one of the alleged masterminds, a Saudi source said on Wednesday.
8216;8216;Five people were arrested yesterday who are among the suspects in the Riyadh bombings and we believe that one of them is a main mastermind of the blasts,8217;8217; the source said.
The source said the arrests were made in Medina but gave no further details.
He said security had been boosted throughout the kingdom following the May 12 blasts on housing compounds in Riyadh that killed 34 people, including eight Americans.
Some Saudi newspapers reported on Wednesday that at least three suspected members of the Al Qaeda were arrested in Medina on Tuesday in connection with the attacks.
The daily Okaz said five people had been arrested at an internet cafe in the city. It reported the alleged mastermind was a Saudi national who was among 19 men wanted by local authorities on terrorism charges following a shoot-out with security forces in Riyadh early this month.
Stung by US accusations of not doing enough to prevent the bombings, Saudi Arabia has vowed to hunt down those responsible and to crack down on militancy.
A Riyadh-based Western diplomat said last Thursday that Saudi authorities had arrested four men on suspicion of belonging to Al Qaeda.
