PANAJI, JULY 23: In a sensational jail-break incident, five convicts 8212; including three murderers, all serving life-sentences at the Aguada Central Jail 8212; escaped from custody at about 8 am on Friday. The Goa police, which received kudos for unravelling three murders on a single day just two days ago, have once again come in the eye of the storm for their apathetic attitude in tackling crime and securing custody of jail-birds.
Hitler Fernandes, Sayyed Mansoor, Aisuddin Mansoor 8212; all convicted for murder 8212; and Kanakraj Nagappa and R K Sunil 8212; both convicted for dacoity 8212; were serving life-sentences at the Aguada Jail.
The inmates, who have 8 am-10 am, as their stipulated recreation-time, made their gateway through a hole excavated in cell number 1, informed deputy collector, North Goa, Sanjit Rodrigues, who is also the in-charge of the Jail. The absence of the five inmates serving in cell number 1 and 2 was discovered only at around 11.15 am by the jail-staff who sounded a general alert. A dog-squad has been pressed into service to nab the culprits. A Superintendant of Police SP Crime has been made in-charge of the investigations in this major setback, faced by the Goa Police.
Jail-breaks, not an unusual phenomenon in this tiny State, have once again brought back memories of the sensational jail-break by notorious smuggler Sukur Nanain Bhakia, around two decades ago. Bhakia was rumoured to have served tranquilisers to the jail-staff at the unauthorised farewell dinner in Aguada Central Jail and thus escaped from the clutches of Gujarat police who had come to arrest him subsequent to his release from Goa.
