CHANDIGARH, Nov 16: Ten truckloads of the first consignment of relief material for the Orissa cyclone victims were flagged off today by the Advisor to the UT Administrator Vineeta Rai. The relief material, in cash and kind, has been collected in response to an appeal by the Chandigarh Administration and includes various items of daily use.

Meanwhile, contributions to the relief packages kept pouring in from various organisations in the city. The Citizens Welfare Society, Sector 23, handed over a truckload of basic necessities including about 275 kg of parched grams and 21 bags of clothes. The truck was flagged off by the Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner M. Ramsekhar.

The Chandigarh Chemists8217; Association has also collected over 81 cartons of essential medicines worth Rs 1.80 lakh, while the Utensils Manufacturers and Industries Association have come forward with a truckload of various kinds of utensils. Helping Hand, an NGO, took active part in collecting relief material from the city residents. Liquor contractors of Chandigarh have contributed Rs 2.25 lakh.

The inmates of Bal Niketan, an orphanage, were among the first to make a donation of Rs 1,500. Besides, the Grain Merchants, Fruit and Vegetable Merchants, Roller Flour Mills Associations and Shivalik Public School have collectively donated a truckload of rice for the cyclone-hit.
