What do you think has gone wrong in Gujarat?

Everything has gone wrong. The state government is not in control. Violence has been raging despite the Army8217;s presence. Every day, seven to eight persons are dying there. But to suggest what should be done in Gujarat is not for me.

If the situation is so serious, why does the NC flipflop over it?

I acted on the directions of the National Conference working committee. They wanted us to abstain from voting on Gujarat in Parliament. The offer to resign came from me as I wanted clarity on the issue on my not supporting the government and still being part of it.

Would the resignation have helped you politically?

I did not want to play politics with my resignation. Some of my party colleagues are angry over it, but I guess I can sit with them and explain.

What do you think of the Hizbul split?

It was inevitable. Majid Dar has realised that there is no support for violence in J038;K. He is also unwilling to take orders from Pakistan, where Hizbul chief Syed Salah-ud-din has been living in splendid isolation, unaware of the ground situation here.
