Around 24 Army jawans travelling on the Jammu-bound Sealdah Express allegedly beat up another passenger on suspicion of being a pickpocket and pushed him out of the train, according to an FIR filed by an eyewitness.

The FIR was filed by Hari Singh Baba at the Laksar railway station in Hardwar, where the body of Ijhar-ul Hasan was found on the morning of July 28.

Ijhar, who succumbed to his injuries at Hardwar’s government hospital, has been identified as a resident of Qazi Sarai in Nagina town, Bijnor district.

The jawans picked on Ijhar and another youth, Salim, at Rampur station the previous day on suspicion after the pocket of one of the jawans was picked, said Ashok Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Hardwar. They stripped the two men and started beating them up, Baba alleged in his complaint. They continued to assault the two men even though nothing was found on them and despite efforts by Railway Protection Force jawans on board the train to intervene, he added.

Salim managed to escape at Nagina station. When Ijhar lost his consciousness, the jawans threw him out of the train onto the platform at Laksar during a night halt, said Baba. Baba, whose destination was Laksar, filed the FIR with the railway police.
