
Former Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee on Tuesday told the CBI that the police were never against the marriage of Rizwanur Rehman and Priyanka and only tried to bring in a solution, after Ashok Todi filed a formal complaint.
During an hour-long questioning by CBI, Mukherjee, who is now ADG Telecom, accepted that he had met Ashok Todi. 8220;We have questioned Prasun Mukherjee regarding the case. Our DIG Satish Golcha and SP Jakir Ahmed were present,8221; said CBI Special Crime Branch joint director Arun Kumar. Mukherjee was questioned at his office.
8220;Mukherjee was asked about the circumstances which led Kolkata Police to intervene in the matter. He said the Todi family met him and lodged a formal complaint after which his officers called in the couple and found that they were legally married. He claimed the officers only tried to find an amicable solution to the matter and Priyanka willingly went back to her parents home for seven days,8221; said a CBI officer.
Asked why the police continued their intervention even after they found out that the couple were legally married, Mukherjee said his officers tried were trying to find a solution acceptable to all.
The Todi family believed that Priyanka was confined by Rizwanur and lodged a new complaint on September 8. The same day the couple was called in again and they agreed to a short separation. 8220;He said if Rizwanur had come to them after seven days when Priyanka failed to return, his officers would have taken action,8221; added a CBI officer.
Meanwhile, with their initial inquiries over, the CBI team left for Delhi on Tuesday.
