Film on AKG screened

With Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, CPIM General Secretary Prakash Karat and other top Left leaders in attendance, the life and times of A K Gopalan, communist leader and former leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, came alive on celluloid on Wednesday night. The 70-minute docu-drama on the Left leader is directed by Shaji N Karun.

Chatterjee recalled his association with AKG when the latter was the leader of CPIM in the Lok Sabha saying he spearheaded efforts to utilise Parliament to highlight the issues of common people and espouse the cause of the working class. 8220;I wish today8217;s MPs could be shown AKG8217;s conduct. How he utilised the forum to raise the issues concerning common people,8221; Chatterjee said.

Karat said he had lot of memories of the great leader and spoke about his role in emancipation of the oppressed and the struggle against imperialism. 8220;I came to Delhi to work in the Parliamentary Party Office under AKG and had the privilege of learning a lot from him,8221; Karat said. Karat introduces the film on screen, with a speech beginning in Malayalam.

Interestingly, many of the characters in the movie are being played by real-life politicians.

While Kerala MP Lonappan Nambadan plays the role of Communist veteran Jyoti Basu, the roles of E K Nayanar and local leader N Aniruddhan are being essayed by their sons Krishnakumar and N Sampath respectively.
