Despite the Kargil conflict and the cyclone, arrivals of foreign tourists has registered a growth rate of 7.2 per cent in November 1999, as compared to a 4 per cent decline in November 1998. Tourist arrivals even went up in the months of May, June and July, when the Kargil conflict was on. The percentage change was 1.67 per cent in May, 8.82 per cent in June and 7.83 per cent in July.

After declining by 5 per cent in April 1999 and increasing by a meagre 2 per cent in May 1999, growth in arrivals has been consistently on the rise.

During the April-November 1999 period, arrivals registered an increase of 5.2 per cent against a decline of 1 per cent during the corresponding period. As compared to this, the world average for tourist arrivals saw an increase of 1.4 per cent in the April to June period of 1999.
