TOKYO, APRIL 17: South African Wayne Ferreira reached his first final in nearly three years by defeating fourth seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-3, 6-2 in the Japan Open today.

Tomorrow, seventh-seeded Ferreira takes on fifth seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, who ousted eighth seed Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

In the women8217;s semifinals, top seed and defending champion Ai Sugiyama of Japan eliminated seventh-seeded Jane Chi of the United States 7-6 8-6, 6-3.

The other finalist is second seed and former champion Amy Frazier, making her fifth final appearance here after beating third-seeded American compatriot Corina Morariu 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Davenport to miss Fed Cup

RALEIGH: Croatia8217;s loss of the home court advantage in this weekend8217;s Federation Cup series against the United States was balanced out yesterday when the world8217;s no. 2 player, Lindsay Davenport, pulled out because of a wrist injury.

Iva Majoli, the top-seeded player on the Croatian team, will play second-seeded ChandaRubin in the first match.In the second match, Moinca Seles will face Talaja , who lost in the third round of the Estoril Open last week and took Venus Williams to three sets before losing in the first round of the Australian Open.
