JAMMU, SEPT 4: Once bitten, twice shy. Not known to hold his views back on anything, Union Defence Minister George Fernandes today played safe when asked about the status of the ceasefire talks with the Hizbul Mujahideen. “It is better not to discuss anything regarding the holding of peace talks with the HM cadres,” he said. The moment Pakistan comes to know about the initiation of any peace talks with HM leaders, it would try its level best to sabotage them, he said. “They have done it earlier also and will do it gain. So the best policy is to keep mum,” Fernandes suggested.

He was talking to the mediapersons here today after a three-day tour of the forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in various sectors of Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked if any secret dialogue was on between the Centre and Abdul Majid Dar, Fernandes once again stressed that we should not discuss the matter. He reiterated that whatever is happening in this regard should be left where it is. “Any further discussion and disclosures will give Pakistan an opportunity to once again spoil the peace process,” he added.

Fernandes also preferred not to comment on the allegations against Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah that he had a vested interest in sabotaging the peace talks.
