
NEW DELHI, MAY 24: Jammu and Kashmir Chief minister Farooq Abdullah today met Prime Minister to discuss the the situation in the militancy-afflicted border state, particularly the intrusion of Pakistan-backed mercenaries in Kargil.
Abdullah, officils 8212; Director general Police, Gurbachan Jagat, and chief Secretary Ashok jaitley 8212; in tow, met the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee this evening. Although the Government of Jamp;K said the meeting was 8220;routine review of the situaion in Jamp;K8221;, sources said the Kargil incident and financial demands of the state Government remained the focus of the meeting.
The State government is also seeking reinforcements for security troops in view of the incoming elections to the panchayats 8212; which is being held in Jammu amp; Kashmir after a gap of 20 years. The Centre had expressed its inability to dispense with more troops but had mooted the proposal for sharing of the police force by states amongst themselves.
The National Conference government is however pressing formore forces for the run up to the panchayat elections following killings of one sitting legislator and a senior functionary of the party8217;s youth wing in Kashmir recently.
The Farooq Abdullah government feels the Pakistan-backed insurgents would step up the killings of political activists to stall the panchayat elections. Abdullah and his team of officials would continue their meeting with the Prime Minister tomorrow, sources said.
