Some Bollywood movies have coloured the way an entire generation perceives love and relationships
They say 8216;Love is Eternal8217;. But is it? The answer to this seemingly innocuous question depends on who you are putting it to. If it8217;s the Maine Pyar Kiya MPK generation 8212; those who were kids or teenagers when the movie was released 8212; the answer may be yes. But if it8217;s the Chalte Chalte generation 8212; then you may be in for some unexpected answers.
These two Bollywood blockbusters can be called watershed movies in India and ones, which have shaped the way an entire generation thinks about love, relationships and marriage. MPK coloured the way of thinking of the contemporary generation in such a way that they began looking at everything with tinted glasses the tint was a deep shade of pink.
Love was all one had to look for in life, if you were an MPK fan. If you found true love, your life was made. You had no need to demand anything more or anything better than that. Love was undying, unselfish and unquestioning. The lead actor and actress always professed unconditional loyalty and affection to each other and pledged to stay together till death did them apart.
8220;Till reality hits you, one doesn8217;t actually realise what it is like. Especially love affairs, we cannot escape the Bollywood influence. In my first affair, I was also very much under the influence of one such movies, may be that was the reason why it didn8217;t work,8221; smiles Subodh Dutt, student, MIT.
These kind of romantic, unrealistic movies have done is to make an entire generation harbour high hopes about life after marriage and given an unusually noble view of life, which some believe is unhealthy. A leading Bollywood filmmaker has even said that it has scarred a whole generation of youth forever and given them a totally improbable perspective on life and love.
8220;Movies are also inspired from the reality. In the previous era, it was more formal. But Kuch Kuch Hota Hai reflects such a real picture of college friendship and romance. It was not all good and sweet in that movie. Neither did it show rich girl and poor guy story. Its near to reality,8221; observes Kajal, student.
While some feel Kuch Kuch Hota Hai genre represent real life live story, some feel it8217;s more of drama and not applicable today. 8220;Coincidence is considerable but otherwise it was far from reality. Moreover, after the flick, every good friend started looking at each other as prospective partner. Why can8217;t we have a movie when we should actually show good friendship,8221; says
Rahul Pandit, a software engineer, says it8217;s a fact that the kind of popular entertainment you are brought up on, influences you deeply. 8220;Yes, me and my friends did have those filmy aspirations of running away with the girl of our dreams and living happily ever after, preferably, in a foreign locale. But the demands of career and marriage make you wake up from your stupor and take a long, hard look at reality. It8217;s disconcerting for a while, but that8217;s the only way to move on,8221; he avers.
Well, a lesson learnt late doesn8217;t mean it8217;s a lesson not learnt well. And that goes in this context as well as it does in any other. Love still makes the world go round, but is it eternal? Nah, no way8230;! Not in the MKP way atleast.
